Write Up: A non-profit group that provides housing in Washington, DC asked us to help renovate a housing facility that had not seen a much improvement since the mid-1990s. Overall the facilities had held up well to the wear and tear of twenty years, except the kitchen that needed a great deal of attention. Cabinets were falling apart, and the capacity of equipment and storage did not meet the needs of the residents.

Our primary task was to redesign the kitchen, which the client had funding for, and offer an overall master plan that could allow piecemeal renovations as future funds became available. We expanded the kitchen square footage by 33% through the elimination of an unnecessary corridor adjacent to the existing kitchen. This made for a simple layout of food storage, preparation, cooking, and cleaning.

This was my first experience as the primary lead on day to day logistics and design guidance. It was an influential experience on how to enhance communication and maintain the best documentation for the whole team.
